Planning policy

At the beginning, I think that learning about the planning system in UK is useless as it is different and may not be applicable in Malaysia construction industry. Through the information given, I realize that although both systems are different, but I will still learn some skill that benefits me in future by going through the process of searching and analyzing the relevant information.

Through this lesson, I learnt that before decide the type of building to be proposed, there are many information need to obtained from Sheffield City Council website such as zone and restrictions on land, requirement of planning permission and procedure of planning application until the submission. This helps me learn the ways to analyze and filter the important information through lots of new and complicated information. 

Hence, this lesson enables me to learn on the skill of managing information properly and decision making as stipulated under CIOB competencies framework. I learnt to effective utilize resources correctly and search the important information in the right direction so that correct decision can be made by eliminate unnecessary information.

Site and Location Analysis

While I’m studying in Malaysia, I had learn to propose a development and considered in various factors before development. However, in UK, there are different construction regulations and culture where I need to spend extra time to fully understand.
The first things I learnt that is identification building old usage by referring to the old map of the project area and strict enforcement on the actions to be carried out to presence of wildlife. These knowledge helps me improved experience in the pre-construction stage of future project.

Furthermore, the important things I learnt are the critical thinking skill. As I should focused on the problems during the process of development of propose building instead of defects of the existing building. An effective approach which is first to decided a proposed development, after that identify the key issues and risks and finally come out with solutions to solve the problems. This thinking skill helps me to brainstorm and generate ideas from the proposed development and I can apply it in the resolution of any problems happened in our daily and working life.

United Kingdom construction is different compare to Malaysia construction as old buildings in UK were using brick for the whole building including the supporting frame.

Through the site visit at Matilda street site, I had learnt a building survey technique which is visual inspection. I understand that the first step to inspect the existing building condition is very important so that we take attention to inspect all the building exterior appearance, interior, surrounding environment and the traffic condition around the site at the beginning.

After gathering all the necessary information, we start consider the factors that would affect the propose development and carried out more detailed research to decide which types of building is most suitable to construct.

Site visit has allowed me to learn that delegation of work properly is a key for making effectively and accurately results. It also greatly helps me to improve decision making skill as required by the professional competence framework of CIOB.

Introduction (Padlet and Google's blogger)

Throughout introduction of padlet wall by Dave, I found it interesting as it act like an online sheet of paper where permitted users can share any information on the paper. Padlet wall is an effective platform of communication that allow us to present project details, drawings and important information to the client. I can using Padlet wall applied to redevelopment at Matilda street site and present my ideas in real life working.

When first exposed to the google's blogger, i'm getting interest on it. Before I dont know how useful it is even some of my friends are using it but i think it is time wasting and useless. However, after i'm start using google's blogger, I found i'm was wrong. Google's blogger is a very convenience platform for me to share my ideas and experience to anyone and get the feedback from them. This not only helps me to improve myself through others opinions and also record every moment in my life.
